And the brakes are so badly warped I get whiplash from the violent shaking every time we have to slow down. Wish me luck!
Not the actual taxi I’m riding in

Yesterday I discovered that the traditional crown vic yellow cab still exists in some places.

When I was in the city about two weeks ago, my cab (it was like a 2011 Camry) had absolutely no brakes. The driver was never able to fully stop at lights in time, always gliding like two feet past the line. From that experience (which cost me $60 from LaGaurdia to Manhattan), and my previous, in which the cab driver physically got out of his car to yell at another driver, I’ve completely switched from cabs to Uber in the city. It’s a bit less convenient, but getting in a moderately clean and safe Gypsy Cab (since that’s what Uber is in NYC) is completely 100% worth it.

NYC requires cabs be fairly new, but lots of places have no such constraints. I imagine the Crown Vic will be serving for a good while more.

I haven’t tried Uber yet, but this trip would have been a good candidate. I survived, but it was worrisome...

I’ve been told that brake warping (at least in normal road cars) is a myth, and that what you are really feeling is brake pad material buildup and rust on the rotors: http://www.stoptech.com/technical-supp…
Regardless, taxis being shitty doesn’t shock me.

That was a really interesting read, although I kinda zoned out on the technical parts ‘cause I’m at work and supposed to be working, I guess.

Uber in the city basically guarantees you a black Avalon with a driver that doesn’t know a word of English. Fortunately their livelihood revolves around you rating them so all rides are usually complaint free. I did one time, however get a guy driving a Passat CC for livery and that was cool.

Here in Montreal, Uber just recently won a landmark case that allowed them to keep operating by essentially subsidizing the existing taxi cartel.

I know a few of my colleagues have used the service, but just haven’t jumped yet. Now that it’s legal, I’m more likely to try.
